As many of us battle the sweat dripping weather here in Philadelphia, the heat is really being turned up in San Francisco. Where the Philadelphia Youth Poetry Movement, compete in the 2011 Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival. Philadelphia will face off against more than 2 dozen teams, from around the country. PYPM is no stranger to competition, this begin PYPM 5th year participating in the Brave New Voices Festival. Below is a highlight of their 2009 performance;
Brave New Voice founded in 1998 by Youth Speaks, a non-profit organization based in San Francisco, promoting youth intellectual and artistic self-development. Youth ranging in ages from 13 to 19 compete in teams to win a slot on the Brave New Voices documentary series, sponsored by HBO and a man who believe in the power of words… Russell Simmons.
Getting PYPM to San Francisco hasn’t been an easy fleet but with the help of the Philadelphia’s Mayor Michael Nutter, community members and US Airlines which donated the 20 roundtrip tickets for 12 youth and 8 adults. PYPM can now focus on winning the competition.
